Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

Established as a public trust in 1895, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh serves the citizens of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County in Pennsylvania with a distinguished history of leadership among the country’s great public libraries. Through its 19 neighborhood locations, including Main Library and the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is the region’s most visited asset, with 2.6 million visitors in 2008.

Each year the Library provides valuable resources, programs, classes and training opportunities that engage the community in literacy and life-long learning. A grant from EQT via the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program is used by the library to enhance the quality of their summer reading program.

The program includes three components: Read to Me for young children not yet reading on their own, Summer Readers for fully independent readers up to and including grade 5, and Teen Readers which includes middle and high school students.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG) is a multi-discipline center for arts and learning that employs the visual and performing arts to foster a sense of accomplishment and hope in the urban community.

MCG is a partner of the Pittsburgh Schools dedicated to the advancement of young people's potential through creativity, communication and mentoring. Young people involved in MCG learn to become creative and intellectual risk-takers, and more than 75% of graduates have gone on to four-year colleges and other career academies.

EQT support via the EITC program has allowed the enhancement of three MCG Youth Programs:

  • The Apprenticeship Training Program, an after-school arts education opportunity.
  • Artists in Schools, which places professional teaching artists in short to mid-term residencies in Pittsburgh Public middle and high schools.
  • Art Explorers, a one-day learning experience for middle school students that allows them to experience original works of art, practice critical thinking skills, participate in a hands-on studio experience, then apply what they have learned in a group oral presentation.
